A driveway that rises sharply from the road can turn a straightforward gate project into a design challenge. Swing gates can work with the right engineering
Swing gates remain a popular choice for traditional homes, statement entrances and properties without side space for a sliding system. On an uneven driveway, they need greater care in their design.
If the ground falls away as the gates open, a pair of swing gates may work well with calculated ground clearance and a carefully proportioned design. If the driveway rises behind the gates, rising hinges can lift each gate leaf as it opens. This can provide the clearance required, although the mechanism and gate geometry must be matched precisely to the slope.
In some cases, a raked gate leaf – one with a bottom edge designed to follow the incline when closed – gives the entrance a more considered finish. It can reduce an unsightly gap without preventing movement. Telescopic gates use overlapping sections that slide behind one another. They are particularly valuable where a full sliding gate is desirable but the available run-back space is limited.
